• Sewing machines, new or in excellent condition.
• Sewing supplies: fabric, thread, needles, tape measures, pins
• Lap top computers, new or in excellent condition.
• Office supplies such as pens, pencils, computer paper, paper clips, scissors.
• Art supplies: paint, brushes, canvases, sketch pads, markers, crayons
• Brand new shoes. (for boys and girls ages 3-18).

On August 1st, a group from Artists for World Peace will be traveling to Moshi, Tanzania. Our work there involves raising the funds to “Raise the Roof!” on a community health care center, as well as to bring supplies, and much love, to the orphans living at Good Hope. The target date for the completion of the community health center is December 1st. Please follow us on our website and face book as we continue to post our fundraising efforts, the list of supplies we are looking to have donated, as well as the trip itself.

A group of Wesleyan students is teaming up with Artists for World Peace to do a research project about Middlesex students’ access to higher education in the arts. We are looking for high school students,college students and parents to interview.

All participants will be entered in a raffle to win a $100 visa gift card.

As founder and executive director of Artists for World Peace, I launched The Dr. Yoram Kaufmann Scholarship Fund in December 2009. Artists for World Peace, an international non-profit organization dedicated to fostering peace through artistic expression, will use the funds to enable children around the world to attain an education. Beginning with children from the Santa Clara Orphanage in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we aim to eventually sponsor a child in each country.

Anyone who knew Yoram (and who knows his wife, Rise), will understand the urgent need I felt to honor this beloved teacher, humanitarian, and friend. So, this past summer, Artists for World Peace conducted all of its humanitarian work in his name. With funds collected in Yoram’s memory, we bought over 500 pairs of new sneakers, which we hand delivered to the children of Santa Clara in Rio de Janeiro.

The Dr. Yoram Kaufmann Scholarship Fund, however, will enable us to permanently honor Yoram’s memory. Since he touched so many lives as a brilliant producer and sharer of knowledge, I thought it most fitting to educate children in his name. Our goal is to raise $100,000.00 this year. We will safely invest the principal and use the interest to create annual scholarships. Building upon the principal each year through donations, Artists for World Peace will help change the lives of our world’s children for generations while also honoring Yoram’s memory.

It is not often that a humanitarian, scholar, teacher, and man of integrity crosses our path and lights the way for so many. Please help us continue Yoram’s legacy by supporting the Dr. Yoram Kaufmann Scholarship Fund. Shu Qilong

Another quarter has passed and Qilong is now over one year old. The lively Qilong is healthy and he approaches everyday happily.

In this quarter, Qilong has made great progress in every aspect. His language and expressions are richer and he can undertake more complex actions. He has learned to crawl quickly and often crawls to investigate places new to him. He can use his fingers and hands well too. Everyday, when he is taking a bath, he uses his hands to pat on the water alternately with splashing water on his and my faces. He is very interested in his environment. He likes playing with the green ball. He pushes it and the ball rolls forward and Qilong will crawl to catch up with it. With practice, Qilong has been able to stand up by holding onto the railings or other objects.

July 20th was Qilong’s first birthday. We had a birthday cake with one candle for him. We put the cake on the small table and the other nannies and children gathered to watch Qilong blow out the candle, which I helped him to do. We sang ‘happy birthday’ and took some photographs for him too. At this time, Qilong crawled around the table and wanted to stretch out his hands to hold the cake. I held his right hand so we could cut one piece of cake for Qilong before we cut the rest of the cake so Qilong could share with the other children. As he was the ‘main actor’ that day, we painted his face so he looked like a cat. He and the other children enjoyed the birthday party.

When I helped Qilong to practice walking, he was unwilling to step forward. I took him to the running machine in the recovery room to practice twice a day. On the first few days of practice, Qilong cried loudly from the beginning to the end of the practice and refused to walk. After a few days passed, Qilong gradually stopped crying. A week passed, Qilong began to be willing to walk on his own. Then I began to use the ‘walker’ to train him. He has been able to hold the railings to walk and can walk more quickly with the ‘walker’ too.

When Qilong sees the other children playing with the toys he likes, he will try to take them away. When I say, ’stop trying to take the toys of the younger sisters away’ he still keeps doing it, while smiling at me. He is mischievous now and he can understand my expressions. When I scold him, he will call me ‘mum’ to show his affection to me. Qilong is very interested in the new toys and the toys which can move. He always sits to observe the new toys and then stretches out to touch them.

If I clap my hands to praise him, he is very happy. When he meets problems and needs help, he will crawl to me. Sometimes when I ask him to bring a toy for the younger sister, he will bring it to me at once. When I talk to him face to face, he will listen to me intently.

Come on, Qilong! I hope you can walk on your own soon!

Shu Jiulin

In this quarter, Jiulin has made great progress. She can play in more and more ways. When she plays, she sometimes bends her knees to her stomach and uses her hands to play with her toes.

Jiulin is a lively and bright girl. She is the most active child when having meals. When it is time to have a meal, she will walk quickly to me and eat the food quickly. Then she will pat her stomach proudly as if to say ‘I am full’ and then she will look at me while smiling happily. Sometimes she is a bit mischievous too. When she is to go to bed, she will pull her diaper off and throw it away. She throws the quilts and pillows on the ground too. When I see her doing this, I will say, ‘Jiulin, what are you doing? The smart child does not do this.’ Hearing my words, she will lie down to pretend to sleep.

During these days, Jiulin seems dependent on me. Once she sees me, she will walk to me quickly and ask me for a hug and then she will follow me. If I do not hug her, she will begin to open her mouth to cry loudly. When I pick her up she will stop crying and begin to smile and call me ‘mum, mum’. To help her to become independent, I often take the toys that Jiulin likes to help her to stand for a longer time. At this time, I will praise her and pick her up to kiss or lift her higher, which always makes her laugh out loud happily.

We would like to thank all of our amazing supporters for once again making this year’s Chief Luciano Perez Holiday Drive to the Rose Bud Reservation the enormous success it was. I received a phone call from a woman named Diane Flynn telling me that she and the Haddam-Killingworth Football Team had collected 200 coats that they would like to donate to our drive. Needless to say, we were thrilled!! On the day we all met to pack boxes, in walked Diane and her husband, with the 200 coats. These were added to the annual coat donation from the Duffy School in West Hartford. It is always thrilling to be able to bring hundreds of warm, beautiful winter coats to our friends on the reservation.

We would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers who make donations every year, in the form of food, clothing, warm blankets, gifts, and cash. Thank you to Middlesex Hospital for the donation of hundreds of boxes, to the First Church of Christ (in Middletown, CT.) for allowing us to use your wonderful space each year, and to our friends at Extra Space Storage. Once again our friend Lou, at Price Rite in Cromwell, Connecticut, ordered skids of food that we were able to load right onto our truck. As the holiday season approaches, I am using this opportunity to share with you what an amazing year this has been for the Artists for World Peace foundation and to ask for your generous support for our Annual Holiday Food and Clothing Drive 2009 Campaign. Each year we hold this event to honor the memory and life work of Chief Luciano Perez, who began this holiday drive many years ago.

Artists for World Peace organizes the Holiday Drive, bringing warm clothing, blankets, and food to the Rose Bud Reservation in South Dakota. Traditionally, we begin organizing this event in August sustaining it through the first week of December. (This drive represents a 19-year old community tradition that began in Oneonta, NY and has continued in Middletown, Connecticut for the last 14 years). Just over seven years ago Artists for World Peace embarked on a long journey towards a grand vision of global peace and unity. With your collective support we are closer to that goal of bringing peace and humanitarian relief one community at a time. A list of the most needed items are as follows:

Sugar, flour, salt, baking powder, coffee, dry cereal, pasta and sauce, tuna, canned meats, juice, soups, stew, canned vegetables and fruit, rice, and beans.

In addition to food we bring new, warm blankets, as well as warm winter coats, hats, scarves, boots and gloves. These are needed for all ages, particularly children. Also needed are warm sweaters, pants, and sweatshirts. We also bring new toys for young children, and art supplies. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to make a generous tax-deductible charitable donation we need to receive your donation by December 1, 2009 in order to purchase the food for this year’s food drive. We have been working with Price Rite in Cromwell, Connecticut, who orders food in bulk for us, that they pack and help us load onto our truck. A special thank you to Lou, the store manager, who so generously helps us each year.

This 2009 Food and Clothing Drive won’t be a success without your help. Thanks so much!!!

Volunteers Needed:
If anyone would like to help us unload donations, sort and box, as well as drive boxes from the church to the storage unit on December 10th, please call or email us. We are looking for 20 volunteers for the evening. Also needed will be vans and trucks for those hours.

This Sunday February 15, 2009 is the big day for Hats for a Cause 2009! We will have a booth located in downtown Chester. We have made some great hats this year and hope you can all come down to support us. This year we are part of the Chester Winter Carnivale. There will be great food, street performers, a chilli cook off, ice sculptures and much more. Please come and show your support! It will be great fun for the whole family.
This year all proceeds from the hats will go to local food banks/shelters and women shelters. Some hats are priced as low as $15, but please remember this fundraiser is about helping others!
